When People Harp On About Brazil Winning The World Cup 5 Times, Don't They Realise That Three Of Those Were By
1970. In the modern era Brazil have won the world cup twice, 94 and 02. Big whoop. None of the players from 94 are still playing, or if they are, they're not up to much twelve years later. So because a team won the tournament 3 times before and in 1970, included in those 5, does that necessarily make them the best team? Hey since 1970 Liverpool have won the European Cup more times than any other team. Does that make them the best? Unfortunately not. This current Brazil team are not faultless, hence them losing. A lot of their players are old, and a lot are hyped up to a stupifying extent. A few good games against the cannon fodder in La Liga and some are apparently world beaters. How long will it be before Brazil are dethroned from FIFA's rankings?and i'm not english, so don't make this out to be english flag waving...

- Well, the new ranking doesn't have anything to do with the 5 World Cup wins; it only takes the past four years into account, and Brazil was at the top, World Cup or no World Cup.
- They qualified at the top of the South American zone (which is supposed to be one of the hard zones) and they won the FIFA Confederations Cup, so even if the Brazilian team didn't do so hot at the WC, they earned their #1 spot.
- (I'm not a Brazilian fan...I was as annoyed as the next Argentine to see Argentina go down in the Confederations final).
2006-07-15 14:50:00 Kieth-Tilton says: I think that Brazil are stil top of the rankings beacuse of the teams they play themost often being worse than them. if you get rid of Argentina from the south american group of countries they have no real competition, which is why in the world cup they were knocked out by the first team that knew how to defend england premier league squads. i honestly think that this time next year Brazil will be outside the top 5 teams in the world but with the European teams being so tightly matched in all areas it is going to be interesting to see who will take over their crown england premier league squads.

- People love history but in a way you are right.
- It's like when idiotic pbp announcers go, "Italy have never won a PK shootout."
- Well, so?
- Near as I can recall none of the members of the 2006 squad were on those losing PK squads.
- It's more a fan thing.
- Hardly relevant to this day and age.
- It's like saying the British defeated numerous nations armed with sticks and rocks and formed an Empire...yeah, so?
- What have you done for me lately?

2006-07-15 17:44:28 Loren-Gardner says: I see your argument but you must consider a few things; england premier league squads. 1. Brazil will always be Brazil, the dominant footballing nation. Their ability to produce players of quality is almost matchless. Take Nilmar for example, he'd walk into any national team but not Brazil. 2. Italy until last week, had only 1 triumph since 1970, so does that make Italy an also ran? Obviously not, Italy like Brazil will always be a contender, but sometimes luck doesn't smile on them. Their teams of 1990, 1994 and 1998 were very strong but they lost 3 penalty shootouts. In fact ,no team has beaten Italy in the regulation 90mins, since the 1986 World Cup england premier league squads. 3. Since 1970, there have been 8 World Cups, Brazil's winning 2 like Italy's, Argentina's and Germany's, has to be considered a good return. And like Germany, they did reach 3 Finals in a row england premier league squads. 4. Brazil had 2 glorious teams in 1982 and 1986, but they were not able to lift the Cup. Conclusion: Brazil have always been thereabouts and have to be considered strongly for every tournament, although it not possible for them win each and every one of them. The FIFA rankings is just that, rankings. Like Tennis rankings, it only helps to sort the seeding out and little else. You actually have to go and win games or tournaments. The French team of 1998 - 2001, was very strong and they duly displaced Brazil from top spot for many a month in that spell. If Italy continue their unbeaten run until the year's end, almost certainly they will overtake Brazil. Although I support Italy, I will admit at this time that Brazil, is still the best team in the world. This based on their achievements over the past 4 years, one quarter-final exit does not make them a poor side overnight. But Italy, Argentina and possibly (on paper) England have narrowed the gap between themselves and Brazil. If you read some of my posts, I have been mentioning a long time ago, that this wasn't going to be Brazil's year. When Europe hosts the competition, inevitably a European team will win. And of the main European nations, only Italy, England and Spain had strong squads. Given Spain's 'choker' tag and England's inability to find a correct system of playing, Italy was the obvious choice. Furthermore, as good as Brazil are going forward, they remain weak at the back. And you know that in this era, a strong defense is the foundation of many championship teams. Lastly, if there was to be a South American winner, Argentina had the better all round team. However, like England, they could not figure out which were the best players, that should form the back-bone of the team. They had Germany on the ropes, but failed to finish them off. My own rankings would be (from WC 2002 to now):1. Brazil 2. Italy3. Argentina4. France ( as finalists)5. England ( based on team strength)6. Germany (although their World Cup record has been maintained, they have failed to beat a major power in 5 years, unless you count the 'friendly 3rd place play-off' with Portugal)7. Spain (had a good unbeaten run until they 'choked' with France)8. Portugal (Scolari has made them hard to beat, but finding goals was always a problem)9. Mexico (Has improved a lot, the team is comparable to European standards)10. Czech Rep / Holland (The former slipping into decline, whilst the latter, slowly in the ascendancy)
2006-07-15 16:42:55 Elden-Reddish says: The FIFA world rankings are based upon everything that has happened since World Cup '94. Since Brazil have won it twice and the Copa America two times, plus Brazil win most of there friendlies and qualifiers too. Plus the ones that got away they were either finalists, semi-finalists or quarter finalists. The rest of the world doesn't come close to equally that record, so they sit on top of the FIFA rankings.
2006-07-15 15:14:20 Laurinda-Rodacker says: I think Brazil is at the top of FIFA ranking because that rating is a crap. For instance - before the world cup:USA - 5th (hahahahaha - this was hilarious comparing with a World Champions Italy in a 13th place)Nigeria - 11th (how many of you have heard about this African team???)Denmark - also 11th (did they appear on a World Cup!?? - PS.I thought the best 32 countries were meant to be the best in the world)............ and so on.......anywayFIFA is a biiiiggggg shame for all of the football lovers
2006-07-15 15:00:13 Alphonso-Hallauer says: I think the recent world cup showed they weren't worth the hype. Well said. As soon as they played a half decent side they were out.
